It’s storm season again and as much as we are unable to predict natural events or disasters, we would all like to be as prepared as possible in the event that one affects us and our homes.

The season will officially run from 1 November 2019 to 30 April 2020, however, a tropical cyclone could form at any time between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020 and would count towards the season total

What landlord’s need to know:

It is the landlord’s responsibility to make sure a rental property is maintained and kept in good working order. The landlord is responsible for repairing or replacing fixtures which have deteriorated due to fair wear and tear.

To be prepared for storm season, landlords should:

  • trim trees
  • unblock drains
  • clear gutters and downpipes
  • fix any broken windows and replace missing louvers
  • on acreage properties ensure clear access to the property, remove fallen trees etc.

As a landlord, you are responsible for house/building insurance. If it is a furnished property, your are also responsible for contents insurance, but not for insuring the tenant’s personal possessions.
